A lot of us are on lockdown right now due to COVID-19. To help kiddos occupy their time during this “viral occupation” here are some writing prompts and activities to help them sharpen their FightWrite™ skills and have a little fun too.
- Create a creature!
Draw a creature with one super power.
Write a story or make a video telling the creature’s name, where it is from and what it likes to eat.
Write a story or make a video telling how your creature celebrates its birthday.
Magically, you become a doctor! POOF! You are a doctor who helps people with problems. Write a story or make a video for your creature and tell it how to feel better when it feels scared.
One day your creature is attacked by a ferocious balloon animal! What type of balloon animal is it? How does it fight? How does your creature defend itself? Does it use its super power?
The parents of your creature and the parents of the balloon animal make the two stop fighting. They then tell the balloon animal and your creature that they have to watch a movie together to calm down. What movie do the balloon animal and your creature watch together? What snacks do they eat?
Draw a picture of the balloon animal and your creature being friends. Sit down and watch a movie with them.
- A world made of candy!
If you lived in a world made of nothing but candy, what would your bed look like?
What candy could you use to make a sword?
Are there animals in your candy world? What do they look like?
What would rain look like in your candy world?
Make a map of your candy world. You have to include your house, a zoo, a hospital, a library, a school. Remember, everything is made out of candy.
Create a weather forecast for your candy world. If there is a heat wave, what would happen to all the chocolate??? If it freezes, then what???
- Sock Puppet fight!!!
Imagine two socks got into a fight. What would they fight about?
How would they fight each other? Would they use weapons? Would they magically grow arms?
Create two sock puppets. Put one on each hand and make them talk out their problem. Watch out! They will get into another fight! But, only let them fight two times before you put a stop to it. Then they have to talk until they get along.
After the socks solve their differences, they have to go out to eat. Draw two plates of food for them to eat. Before they eat, they sing a song together. What song do they sing?
Sit down and have a snack with your sock puppets.
- Bugging out!
You wake up tomorrow and discover that you are a bug! Draw a picture of what you look like. Are you fat? Do you have wings? Are you hairy? Colorful? Do you stink???
Write or make a video telling about waking up and discovering that you are a bug. What do you think when you realize you are a bug? Are you trapped in your huge pajamas? How do you get out of bed?
You find a book that tells you how to turn yourself back into a person. But, it is written in secret bug language and only you can read it! Write or make a video telling everyone what has to be done. There has to be at least three steps to turning you back into a real, live kid.
While you are a bug, you meet a bird that wants to eat you and you can’t get away from it. Do you fight the bird, run from the bird or try and talk the bird out of eating you?
Fight the bird – If so, how? Do you have a weapon to help you fight? What does the weapon look like? Where did you get it?
Run from the bird – If so, where do you run? Do you hide?
Talk to the bird – What do you say to the bird to convince it not to eat you?
When you are a kid again, you make a card for the bird. Decorate the card. Inside the card, tell the bird why you two should be friends.
Go to your window or outside and see how many birds and bugs you can count today.
I hope during this “stay at homeschool” time, you get in some quality time with your kiddos. If you’d like more writing prompt ideas for your homeschooler, reach out any time via the Contact Form.
