If your character is wielding a knife or on the receiving end of a blade, you might be surprised where that blade is most likely to land – literally – in two ways. In this post, we will look at both where people are stabbed, both on the body and in the world . Blade Wounds (Not Assault)

When you look at the stats of injuries by blades, you might see some that are seemingly what we writers are looking for but really aren’t. For example, a hospital in England compiled statistics of wounds by knife and found the following:

Limbs – 63.9%

Chest – 12.1

Abdomen – 9.6

Abdomen & Chest – 3.6

Head & Neck – 3.3

Chest/Limb – 2.5

Limb/Head/Neck – 1.5

Other – 3.5

While these stats are indeed regarding wounds by blades, they are not related to assault. Where people are injured in the course of an assault are different.

Head – 4.3%

Face – 9.4

Neck – 11.1

Thorax – 48.7

Upper Extremity – 25.6

Abdomen – 25.6

Lower Extremity – 12.3

Those of you who are “mathy” may notice that those stats add up to over 100. That’s because there were instances of multiple wounds.

These stats are for writers who are writing self inflicted knife wounds. If you have considered harming yourself, please, please get help. You are important, you matter. Please don’t choose a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

It is hard to find the stats on where people are going or what they are doing when they are assaulted with a knife. However, as this is an assault, it is reasonable to say these are the places our characters might be when they are attacked with a knife.  These stats are only for the United States.

According to 2019 statistics, here are the states with the highest percentage of homicide by stabbing. This is not the highest number of stabbing deaths just the percentage of homicides that were by blade.
